I am Le Huynh Minh Triet and I won the prestigious 2017 Honda Y-E-S Award in Vietnam. I continued to receive the Honda Y-E-S Plus Award from Honda Foundation, Japan to conduct my research internship at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) Dam’s lab of Professor Chi Hieu Dam from April 15th to July 1st, 2018. The internship did not only allow me to work in a professional research environment, but also gave me an eye-opening opportunity to learn about Japan and its magnificent cultures.
My research topic was about “Building advanced machine learning models to determine the complex properties of various chemical and biological systems.” During my internship, I could enhance my knowledge and skills in data mining and machine learning through daily seminars and weekly group meeting with many talented researchers. At the end of my internship, I managed to produce some decent preliminary results. My work is going to be presented at an international conference in September 2018, which is a strong foundation for our further collaboration.
Besides the academic aspects, I also had a wonderful time exploring Japan and enjoyed my stay in this beautiful country. My first impression of Japan was its fresh and healthy food ranging from Sushi, Sashimi, Tempura, Udon, Ramen, Soba, etc. Besides the excellent cuisine, I also loved the living environment here. Around the campus of JAIST, the mountainous and natural sceneries were breathtaking. Along with the peaceful atmosphere in Ishikawa, I did experience the life in Tokyo, and I was amazed at its huge and convenient transportation system (e.g., Shinkansen).
Furthermore, the Japanese people were so friendly and helpful that I could live comfortably without knowing any Japanese word. I also embraced Japanese politeness by saying “ありがとうございました” (thank you) in many situations even in the advertisements.
Last but not least, the Honda Y-E-S Get-together meeting was such a great opportunity for me to make great friends and engage in many interesting activities to learn about the 5S principles that facilitated the great Japanese advancement.
In brief, my Japanese internship along with the participation in the Honda Y-E-S program is one of the most unforgettable memories in my entire life. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Honda Foundation and Honda Vietnam for giving me such privilege to be a part of this wonderful journey.
